‘Anger as more illegal dumps uncovered’.
The Wicklow Times headline captures the feelings on news of a recent dumping at a scenic location in county Wicklow. The people responsible for the illegal dumping ‘…had to drive their truck into a barrier and smash it down before driving into the woodlands to dump the waste. They are spoiling the area for tourists and locals alike.’ Commenting on the incident Senator Deirdre De Burca stated that, ‘It is horrific to think that people still think they can get away with this.’ She also reinforced the PURE message in relation to unauthorised waste collectors, ‘People have to be vigilant about who they give their waste to and that the companies are disposing of it legally.’ The article also provides a quote from the former Minister of Environment Mr. Dick Roche. ‘I hope that they have the full weight of law thrown at them…the fact that electrical goods were dumped is just outrageous, especially now that you can dispose of electrical goods for free.'
The subsequent clean-up of the site by the PURE project amounted to over 9 tonnes of illegal dumping being removed from the landscape.
